Proverbs 13:20 tells us that we become like the people we hang out with. It’s pretty obvious that you won’t grow beyond the level of people you spend the most time with.
Look around at the five closest people you hobnob with. That is a picture of where you are or where you are going to. If you don’t like what you see, and if you don’t want to live like those you hang around with and if you want to continue to move forward in life, you will have to get some new friends and mentors.
According to psalm one, if you listen to the ungodly, the sinner or the scornful, you will not be blessed. In other words, negative relationships bring a curse. Choose your friends; don’t let them choose you.
New friends and mentors don’t necessarily have to be physical; you can make new friends and mentors through social mediums, seminars, books, audio, and visual learning materials, etc. But, be wise and cautious in your selection. If you want to move to the next level anytime soon, then you need to start hobnobbing with people who are already doing what you are dreaming of doing.
Your Mom or Dad may not be the best source for counsel. Remember, their counsel will only take you as far as they have gone and no further. If they have never been where you’re trying to get to, then it’s safe to say that they can’t help you get there. Its time to get some new “Parents”!
